Moving home is one of those things that we either do very rarely or often throughout our lives. But, no matter how much experience you have in the field, it rarely cancels out the difficulties. Moving house not only disrupts your everyday life for some time, but it also requires a lot of organisation and support to make the process as smooth as possible. Here at Wild & Lye, we have over 30 years of experience helping those in Bristol and Bath to move with confidence. This is why we’re bringing you our top tips for moving home in 2021 right here.

Plan As Early As Possible

There are so many layers to moving house. After you’ve decided where you’re moving to, you need to plan to pack up all your goods, physically transport them and unpacking at the end. Not to mention organising how you and your family will live during this interim period and ensuring you have the essentials to hand. The best way to do this with the least amount of stress is to plan as far in advance as possible. As soon as you have your move-in date, get started with ordering packaging and writing out an inventory. The more time you give yourself, the less chance that something will go wrong.

Declutter

We all accumulate items throughout our time in a home that we don’t need. Whether these are sentimental items or broken electronics we can’t bear to part with, it pays to consider whether these need to make the move with you. Remember, the more stuff you have, the more space you’ll need in a removal van and the more costly the move will be overall. Take an honest look at the items in your home – particularly those in the loft and those untouched cupboards. Have you used them in the last year? Will they be essential in the new home? Could they be better used if given to a friend or family member?

Book Your Removal Company Early

Particularly important if you’re moving during the height of summer, it pays to get your removal services booked as far in advance as possible. This way you’ll ensure you get the date and the support that you need. And, you can also begin to plan backwards – for example, having items such as the washing machine or dishwasher unplugged as close to your moving date as possible.

Create A Detailed Inventory

It’s not until you move home that you realise how many items you have (or the state of some of them). If you’ve chosen to work with a professional removal company, and even if not, it pays to make an inventory of everything. Take note of the item name/description, what condition it’s in and how many you have of them. This also gives you the chance to decide what room or location the item will sit in your new home. And, it makes sure that nothing gets left behind too.
